Planning to Start for the £300m A1 Widening Around Gateshead

Plans for over £300m of improvements from Highways England for widening 2.5 mile section of the A1 carriageway between Birtley and Coal House have been submitted to the planning inspectorate.

This proposed project will mean that the A1 south of Gateshead will be increased and widened to four lanes on the southbound carriageway and three lanes on the northbound carriageway.

All works are essential in maintain a good flow of traffic and accommodating future growth.  The proposed works will also include replacing the Allerdene railway bridge which carried the A1 over the East Coast Mainline.

The current proposed scheme was one out of 16 projects which have had to be rescheduled since 2017.

If consent is given by the planning inspectorate, works could start by late 2020 or early 2021.
